So at 1:53pm Tuesday August 23, 2011 DC had an earthquake. The official measure from the US Geological Survey are saying it was a 5.9. At last check, the Capitol, the Pentagon, and various federal buildings are being evacuated. Additionally, I've heard that DC students are fine. The last earthquake recorded in the DC area was in Gaithersburg on July 16, 2010; it measured 3.6. And according to CNN Virginia has only recorded 25 earthquakes since it became a state.
The director of the US Geological Survey, Marcia McNutt, is warning that this might not be over yet:
“What the concern is, of course, is that this is a foreshock. If it’s a foreshock, then the worse is yet to come.”
All and all it was pretty scary. We don't have many of these in the Cleve. My co-worker and I looked to see if it was a metro train (we work right on the red line), and saw no train. Then it started to intensify a little at which we decided it was an earthquake.
The DC Metro is running, but at reduced speeds. Who has two thumbs and is bussing it home? This girl.
