Movie Review: Synecdoche, New York

With all the excitement about the film fest, I forgot that we also watched Synecdoche, New York this weekend. I've got to say, I really liked this movie. It is one of those films that you can stop thinking about after watching it. Very good.

The most skeletal plotlines seem to be "man has wife, man loses wife, man does something grandiose to impress wife and fails", which seems simple enough, but there is so much more to this movie than that. I just read the wikipedia entry for this movie and learned that the director Charlie Kaufman wrote several screen plays that I also love including Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind, and Adaptation. However, if you haven't seen this movie yet do not read the wikipedia page. It is very informative, but gives away major plot points.

I'm really afraid to say anything else about it because I would hate to spoil the movie (Kari, I'm talking to you, you need to see this!) but I will say it reminds me of a Pinter play, which I love. Actually, they reference Pinter at one point and that is how I learned that he died on Christmas Eve 2008.
