Let's begin with Rep. Todd Akin, or as I'm going to call him till he leaves loses the Missouri Senate seat, the Legitimate Rape Guy. Apparently, this guy believes a woman's body will involuntarily miscarry if she is
The best part of this thing is that Akin thinks this is backed up by science. Yep, a Republican pulling out the word science without knowing what it means. Akins says:
"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."Sciences and magic. Because even if this magical miscarriage didn't happen, Akin doesn't believe abortion should be legal. Oh My God you guys, can we call this a faith based abortion?
After shit hit the fan over the weekend, Akin dialed it back releasing the following statement:
"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the feel empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve."Of course, we can assume these thousands of women meet the requirements for "legitimate rape." Fuck this guy. Really, this guy sucks.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, is running against Akin for Sentate, and was losing by a margin of 41.3 to 49.7 percent. Naturally, she was "stunned" by Akin's stance and statement (nice calling it a stance).
I'm with Jezebel, I'm angry with this guy, but not shocked. How can we be shocked? These people hate women. They don't understand sexual assault, and they don't want to. Akin voted for an anti-marital rape law...seriously. He wants the word "forcible" to be included in definitions of rape.
We need to prevent people like this from taking office. We need to be clear: Rape is rape. Legitimate rape, gray rape, etc are all terms to hurt victims.
Ok, so now for the personal story from over the weekend.
We've all played wingman for a friend where you must engage a kind lame person so your friend can get somewhere with the person they are interested in. So I'm trying to get this guy to talk to me while my friend is with his friend. All cool. I deal with the conservativeness and "I work on the Hill." I go directly to sports do not pass go. I can talk sports with anyone but a Ravens or Heat fan. After a painful conversation on baseball, yes, painful.
We talk Olympics.
And Kobe Bryant.
And I make a Kobe is a rapist joke. I know the Judge dismissed the charges against Kobe; I know the civil suit between Kobe and his accuser is sealed. Apparently, in Texas, Kobe won. And he won because his accuser is a slut.
What the what? This isn't where I drew the metaphorical line in the sand. I listened to him mansplain welfare to me...wrap your mind around that. There is no winning here. We'll never know exactly what happened in that hotel room, but come on. At this point in the evening I couldn't fake it anymore, and I called it a relatively early night. But in what world do you explain to a woman 1. how to do her job and 2. that the accuser was to blame for a possible sexual assault. I imagine even women sympathetic to Kobe might be a little wary of chatting up a guy who is immediately opposed to victims. I don't know, I hear warning bells, maybe that's just me. There obviously was no hotel room in our future. Of course after Kobe, I continued this conversation until it was dead. I had to know more. Please, sir, tell me more about how to do my job because no one could possibly be this dense. I can admit when I'm wrong. And I'm wrong, some people are very dense.
