Santorum Steps Aside

I'm kind of disappointed that Santorum is bowing out. He was a good time for liberals in a completely horrifying way. Santorum stepped aside after a weekend  of "prayer and thought." This leaves the nomination to Romney. Santorum referenced of his daughter's recent illness as his reason for conceding. Apparently, Santorum called Romney before his announcement, which was most likely a concession call. Romney, it seems gave the obligatory you'll have a role in the future of the Republican Party line:
"We exchanged our thoughts about going forward, and we both have a great deal of interest in seeing the country taken in a very different path. I look forward to his work in helping to assure victories for Republicans across the country in November."
Santorum and Romney are going to have a face-to-face talk soon, and I like to imagine them hugging it out especially given the bitterness of their campaigns. Santorum never said Romney by name during his remarks. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul claim they will stay in the race till August.

So where will the crazy come from without Santorum? I'm pulling for a bat-shit-crazy VP. Bachman and Perry come to mind, but maybe they'll unearth some gay or lesbian Republican.

And Jezebel's comment of the day:
"Sorry Rick Santorum, but you have to carry your dead presidential campaign to full term."

Santorum's War on Industry

Sometimes, I feel like I went to sleep and woke up in the 1970s. This has been happening more and more lately. First with discussions on birth control as though it is up for debate, and now Dworkin like discussions on porn. Of course when the Republican candidates are involved there is less coherent arguments.

Naturally, Santorum is promising to rid the nation of porn.
“America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking,” the former Pennsylvania senator wrote in a statement posted on his campaign website.
I guess, this is the next target on Santorum's list of things to alienate people and pander to the conservative right.
“Current federal ‘obscenity’ laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier,” Santorum wrote in the statement, adding that these laws should be “vigorously enforced.”
"Vigorously enforced." Well, I don't know about that. Additionally, Obama isn't doing enough to be tough on porn. I'm guessing because he realizes how well the industry is doing. A writer for the Chicago Tribune, Steve Chapman argues Santorum doesn't know what he's talking about,

"Santorum doesn't seem to notice that as porn has become ever-more available via the Internet, the prevalence of rape has plunged. Since 1991, the national rate has fallen by 86 percent -- compared to a decline in overall violent crime of 65 percent," Chapman wrote.
Which is true!. Porn is an ever growing billion dollar industry.
