If you don't recognize these guys, you probably don't have a child under 10 at home (neither do I, but I did the Google image search so I know who they are). Anyway, the gentlemen on the right in matching outfits are the Imagination Movers and the lady in the red dress is Nina (I have no idea who the guy with the silly bow-tie is, but he's incidental to this story).I went out to lunch on Tuesday with my friend and her three-year-old son Jack. Jack loves these guys, who seem to be like the Wiggles of today's 3-year-olds. Jack also has a lot of musical instruments for a young kid, and I knew this, so when we sat down I asked him what instruments he had because I play a lot of instruments as well. He started listing them off and his mom told me that he didn't believe I could play an instrument because I'm a girl and girls only sing.
What?!
Apparently, this Nina chick doesn't play any instruments so little Jack with his little impressionable mind just assumes that boys play instruments and dance and girls can only sing. Luckily, I have a fancy-pants internet phone so I showed him some Facebook pictures of me playing keyboards, bass guitar, and saxophone at a show we had last summer, and then I told him that I also have a clarinet, a second saxophone, and a xylophone at home, AND that I play more instruments than both of the boys in my band. He was amazed and I hope I changed his mind about girls, but this really irritated me! They really can't find a girl who can play an instrument? Don't girls need role models in the music world, too? I guess my kids will just watch Yo Gabba Gabba, where all my favorite indie rock bands cameo.
