This week in women aren’t funny

I’m just kidding. Women are funny. Hell I’m hysterical, and might well be the funniest person you know, well me or M…there is an ongoing disagreement there. It is hard to be funny all the time, anyway mine is a finely honed defense mechanism from childhood, as it turns out so is M’s…maybe a lot of people who work at quips. This leads me to two topics: Charlie Hebdo and the Golden Globes.

First, Charlie Hebdo, those comics are racist. And to begin, let’s back up and get the citation right, Evelyn Beatrice Hall originally said the famous Voltaire quote about defending to the death your right to say something I disagree with. Hall wrote under a pen name. Amazing how every awesome thing ever said wasn’t said by a man, huh? Moving on, those comics were racist, and it is hard for me to generate the outrage everyone else seems to be because of free speech in comedy. I don’t think people should be killed even for the most evil of things they say…I don’t think anyone should be killed. But let’s not pretend Charlie Hebdo was the great shining light for free speech and comedy…But continue dying on this hill people, while real journalists are being murdered with little attention being paid. At least spread the love and awareness.

Secondly, the Golden Globe’s Cosby joke. Well, the punch line there is we all know Bill Cosby is a rapist, and we don’t care. Well at least we didn’t care. I love Tina Fey and Amy Poelher, but come on ladies aim higher. A better joke would have been just to say that. I don’t mind rape jokes where the rapist is the target or rape culture, but this joke was just kind of a “we all know what’s up” moment. And that isn’t a joke, that’s just rape culture. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a professional comedian but come on. That said the George Clooney joke was boss.

Kenneth the Page is a Governor...

I have watched this so many times. Actually I put it on anytime I become angry with my job; it will remain one of those things that will bring a smile to my face for months to come. Seriously though this is sad on so many levels. Watch and enjoy...

Stuck It

Anyone watch the Golden Globes last night? Because if you did then you must have seen Ms. Tina Fey's acceptance. She proceeded to tell the all the haters out there to "Stuck it."

I still love you 30 Rock...

I was passively reading the New Yorker this morning and they had an article on one of my favorite shows, 30 Rock, so of course I wanted to see what they were saying. Needless to say, I think the stuffed shirts over at the New Yorker don't have much of a sense of humor. This quote really burned me:

"Fey has surrounded herself with a cast that has one spectacular member and
a couple of really good ones, but that averages out to only fair. Her own
performance falls into the not-so-great category. ... Fey’s intelligence comes
across, of course, but it’s a kind of managerial intelligence, a high level of
competence."

"So it moves at a pretty good clip and is full of zingers, but in the first
season I found myself fast-forwarding through many of the scenes that didn’t
involve Alec Baldwin or Jack McBrayer..."

Ouch.

I will be the first to agree that this show would be nothing without Jack Baldwin, he is absolutely hilarious, dry, etc., but to say that the scenes without him are completely not worth watching really burns me. Maybe the folks over at the New Yorker just have an easier time laughing at jokes about marketing, corporations, etc.

Poehler Alert

I heart Amy Poehler: Smart Girls at the Party. Poehler with ON Network are putting this together, and I love it. It was picked up earlier this morning by Feministing.com. Seriously Tina Fey and Amy Poehler rock my world.

SNL Sexist? I am Shocked…because they have been a pillar of enlightenment in the past.

Yes, Carly Fiorina has come out condemning Tina Fey’s portrayal of Sarah Palin as sexist. Check out the Huffington Post article here. Fiorina had little to say about Amy Poehler’s Hillary Clinton except, “sexist in the sense that just because Sarah Palin has different views than Hillary Clinton does not mean that she lacks substance.” I am just wondering if Fiorina watched the same skit I did? Because I watched two female comedians, we won’t discuss the barriers they had to fight in their career choice, giving exaggerated portrayals of two female politicians, who have both been discriminated against in the media. No one cared about Hilary being protrayed as a “ballbuster,” but we can’t call Sarah a “ditz and a beauty queen.”

Didn’t Palin, say women who expect to compete with men have to work harder? I don’t subscribe to this line of thought, but I mean she is the one who said it. [I don’t have a link for this; I saw it on the Daily Show.] I think the sexism in our media and cultire was a disservice to Hilary, and is now for Sarah. But again, when you campaign on culture and not on issues this is going to happen. When it is as important to have been a PTA, hockey mom as it was to be Mayor and Governor when running for the Vice Presidency then this is going to happen. You want people to relate you to you because you have no experience then people are going to spend a lot of time talking about your inability to answer questions or your weak answers.

I’d personally be happy with Tina Fey as our Vice or Liz Lemmon for that matter.
