Reproductive Regulations?

People serial kill, serial date, and of course serial procreate. William Saletan, over at Slate, is bring attention to the Georgia Senate Bill 169 which was proposed by state senator Ralph Hudgens. Hudgens of course is one those Republicans who believes in small government except when the government will dictate how other people live their lives. He of course is using Nadya Suleman as the reasoning behind this bill. Suleman gave birth to octuplets and already at six other children (that's fourteen is you're keeping score). Again just a reminder, the fertilization industry needs oversight, but no other industry (there might be some feelings of scientists playing God because as you know only God grants life).

The bill limits the number of embryos that can be implanted to 2 or 3 depending on the woman's age. Of course, this increases the risk to the woman. Often, the embryo doesn't implant and the woman will have to undergo the procedure several times adding to her risk. But of course the bill doesn't care about women's safety. The bill also doesn't care so much about protecting the tax payers. According to Staleman, "But it also does several things that have nothing to do with saving tax money or protecting women from the risks of carrying multiple fetuses. It forbids the sale of eggs or sperm, bans therapeutic human cloning, and prohibits any stem-cell research involving the destruction of leftover embryos."

Did you get all that? Know what the bill is about yet? Not women, not tax payers, this bill is about granting embryos legal rights.

My position on this has always been the same; if it lives in me then it has fewer legal rights than I do. That goes for embryos, parasites, and alien spawn.
